How to reach Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu is located on the opposite coast from Kuala Lumpur, which means a flight will be your best option for getting there quickly, and there are plenty of flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu available, often at value fares.

 

The local airport is Sultan Mahmud Airport, Kuala Terengganu, which is located about 15km from Kuala Terengganu town centre, and around 8.7km to the conference venue – Duyong Marina & Resort. There are four airlines which operate daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu (namely, Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air, and Firefly). Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia operate from KLIA and KLIA2 (to Sultan Mahmud Airport, whereas Firefly and Malindo Air operate from Subang Airport. Journey by air takes approximately 45-55 minutes. However, due to Covid-19 pandemic, there will be some changes on the flight operators and schedules.
 

There is bus service – MARA Liner MyBAS available from Sultan Mahmud Airport to Hentian Bas Majlis Bandaraya Kuala Terengganu hourly. The fare is around MYR2 to MYR3 and the journey takes less than 10 minutes. Public taxis, Grab and MyCar are also available, and the fare from the airport to the conference venue is approximately MYR30.
 

Alternatively, hiring a car gives you a freedom to control your stay in Kuala Terengganu. There are also several car rental desks available on the ground floor of the airport at reasonable prices. 

By Car

If you own a vehicle or have decided to rent one for the duration of your stay, traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu by car might be your best choice. With your own vehicle, you can travel at your own pace, stopping for food and sightseeing along the way.

When travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu by car, the distance is 435.5 kilometers, via the East Coast Expressway (LPT). The LPT which starts from Gombak, Kuala Lumpur has shortened the driving time to Kuala Terengganu. It usually takes four to five hours driving if you drive straight through, or longer if you want to break up the drive and stop more often. Several rest and relax (R&R) areas are also available along the expressway.
 

Alternatively, visitors can also enjoy scenic views of coastline and villages through Federal Route 3 from Kuantan, Johor Bharu or Kota Bharu which usually takes longer driving times.

By Bus

Flying is the quickest option, but that does not mean it is necessarily the best. Going from Kuala Lumpur or any cities to Kuala Terengganu by bus can offer the chance to see parts of Malaysia that you would miss if you flew. Going to Kuala Terengganu by bus is the best option if you want to avoid flying and travel overland, but in an easy, comfortable and direct journey. Travelling by bus to Kuala Terengganu is cheap and straight forward, and there are very regular departures to choose from.


Kuala Terengganu is also very well connected with main cities in Peninsular Malaysia including neighbourhood city, Singapore by bus. Multiple companies offer a bus to Kuala Terengganu, most of which will cost you around MYR50 to MYR70. If you are wondering which the best bus to Kuala Terengganu is, the answer depends on your schedule as there is not much difference in service – so just choose the time that suits you best. There are night buses that leave late in the evening if you prefer to take a sleeper bus. The journey takes approximately six to seven hours and include two rest stops for food and refreshment.
 

If you are departing from KLIA, KLIA2 or Subang Airport to Kuala Terengganu, there are buses available to get you to Terminat Bersepadu Selatan (TBS). The bus fares from TBS to Kuala Terengganu range from MYR55 - MYR60 depending on your bus selection.
